NEW YORK: America's second largest telco Verizon Communications on Monday launched its new fibre-optic based FiOS video service in Manhattan – a challenge not welcomed by extant cable duopoly Cablevision and Time Warner Cable.

FiOS is initially on offer in 108 New York neighbourhoods with 'triple play' voice, video and data packages starting at $95 (€60.33; £47.64). The deal includes over 100 high definition channels.

It aims to roll-out the package to 500,000 New York City homes by the end of this year and – "within a few years" – extend expand the service area to around three million businesses and homes.
