LONDON: UK regional newspaper group Northcliffe Media has launched 45 local websites as it tries to boost its online presence in the face of declining advertising revenues and circulations of print titles.

Northcliffe, part of the Daily Mail & General Trust group, now has 151 websites compared with 113 weekly and free newspapers.

The 'hyperlocal' expansion of its 'This is ..." online brand is expected to continue and may develop to include regions where Northcliffe does not currently have print titles.

Declares Sean Mahon, director of marketing: "If you rewind the clock to a few years ago, people would describe businesses like Northcliffe as primarily newspaper publishing businesses with a few websites. Now they'd describe us as a multimedia business."

The firm claims a combined audience reach of around 4.7 million readers across all its existing publications.
