Britain's self-regulating (some say self-serving) press watchdog, the Press Complaints Commission has appointed an insider, Tim Toulmin, to replace Guy Black as the body's director. He joined the PCC in 1996 and has been acting director since the latter's departure.
Commission chairman Sir Christopher Meyer appeared a tad defensive when announcing the selection of a candidate from within the charmed circle; an appointee who like his chairman is a Cambridge (Peterhouse College) man.
"This is no status quo appointment," Meyer felt it necessary to proclaim. "Tim has clear, imaginative ideas for taking the PCC forward and improving our service to members of the public, who continue to come to us in ever-increasing numbers."
