Recruitment [help wanted] advertising in British national newspapers plunged to an eight-year nadir in October, according to the monthly Report on Jobs, compiled for the Recruitment & Employment Confederation by consultants Deloitte & Touche.

The October figures were hit by a 20% slump in job ad revenues, the steepest fall in the report’s seventeen-year history. However, the faintest shimmer of a silver ling was apparent, flagged by an “easing in the annual rate of decline in press ads to the weakest for sixteen months”.

Worst hit among the job-ad sectors were finance, accounting and information technology.
