A new newspaper – backed by British media group Archant – will hit Dublin’s newsstands in the spring.

Dublin Daily, a 64-page colour tabloid, has assembled a £2.6 million ($4.1m; €4m) launch budget and hopes to build a circulation of 33,000 within two years. It will focus on news, sport and entertainment in Ireland’s capital.

Archant, which specialises in regional newspapers in the UK, is the biggest single shareholder with a 20% stake, having invested £1 million in the venture.

“The rationale for the launch of Dublin Daily is very clear when you consider that this is the only capital city in Europe without its own daily newspaper,” commented the paper’s editor, former Gaelic football player Liam Hayes.

“Coupled with a demographic that has changed radically over the past two decades in particular, it makes absolute sense to target Dublin as a city.”
