CANNES: The prestigious Film Grand Prix at this year's Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival has been awarded to Tribal DDB Amsterdam for its Carousel film for Philips. The interactive online movie, directed by Adam Berg with music from Michael Fakesch, was created for the launch of Philips' Cinema 21:9 LCD TV - the first home television with a cinema-proportioned screen.

The full interactive version, available at philips.com/cinema, contains a series of films within the film featuring the director, lighting and special effects experts talking about the different aspects of making movies. The agency bettered 261 shortlisted competitors from which the Film jury, chaired by BBDO North America chairman and chief creative officer David Lubars, picked an additional 16 gold, 36 silver and 35 bronze winners.

The communications behind Barack Obama and Joe Biden's successful US presidential bid was doubly awarded with the Titanium Grand Prix and the Integrated Grand Prix. The Obama for America campaign was selected from 23 shortlisted entries by a jury headed by Droga5 founder, David Droga.

Other awards at the 56th Festival, which came to a close on Saturday evening, included the Sao Paulo-based DDB Brazil named Advertising Agency of the Year and BBDO awarded Network of the Year. In a rare piece of good news for the recession-struck automotive industry, Volkwagen was announced Advertiser of the Year.

Elsewhere, the Thai firm PHENOMENA won the Palme d'Or which recognises the best production company and a special jury commendation was given to Believe Media in Los Angeles for its Wassup '08 "True Vote" ad.
