ALVISO, California: TiVo announced Wednesday a new and ground-breaking partnership with The Chicago Tribune - described by Friedman, Billings, Ramsey analyst Brian Coyne as a bid to "differentiate their product relative to what they're calling 'generic DVRs'."

Coyne hails the deal as "another expansion of TiVo's feature set" that will deliver the recommendations of Tribune TV critic Maureen Ryan straight to the TVs of subscribers to the new service.

She will also host twice-monthly videos summarizing her recommendations.

Initially, the recommendation service will be available only to around 100,000 TiVo subscribers in the environs of Chicago.

But TiVo ceo Thomas S Rogers says the firm is negotiating similar partnerships with other print media. If successful, the concept will create new relevance for local TV critics, whose numbers have diminished in recent years as papers cut costs.

Says Rogers of his new baby: "It creates a connection between reading the recommendations and actually having them on your TV set at your convenience."
