Stockholm-headquartered Metro International, the world’s largest free newspaper publisher, will launch a new daily title in each of France’s three principal cites – Paris, Lyons and Marseilles – during the first quarter of 2002.

Metro plans to circulate 400,000 copies daily on the streets of Paris, using a temporary army of up to six hundred distributors – bypassing its usual practice of distributing via a city’s transport system. The capital’s network is exclusively contracted to Publicis-owned Metrobus which produces a rival freesheet, A Nous Paris.

No such problems exist in Lyons and Marseilles, where the green light has been given to distribute 200,000 copies daily via each city’s transport system.
