Lawmakers in Slovakia are extending restrictions on tobacco advertising.

The latest legislation, which comes into effect next month, allows promotion of tobacco products only at the point-of-purchase. It also bans sponsorship of events which would either directly or indirectly promote tobacco products.

The laws will be policed by the country's State Food Administration and by retailers. Fines of up to €250,000 ($295k; £169k) can be imposed for breaches of the rules.

Existing anti-tobacco laws, which ban advertising in traditional media, were introduced in 2001.
