French Formula One auto-racing team Renault, formerly known as Benetton, has broken-off its twelve year relationship with sponsor Japan Tobacco.

The deal, which features JT's Mild Seven brand, will terminate at the end of this year's season and is the latest severing of the many longstanding ties between tobacco manufacturers and motorsport.

Says Renault plaintively: "Japan Tobacco will not be easy to replace and [we] will probably need two or three new sponsors to make up the lost revenue."

Other F1 racing team to stub-out tobacco sponsorship are McLaren (the West brand) and Honda (Lucky Strike).
