The Australian televison industry has been taken aback by news that David Gyngell is to return to the helm of struggling Nine Network, two years after quitting the same "untenable position".
Gyngell, currently working as US head of Granada Productions in Los Angeles, left Nine citing constant interference from the management at parent company Publishing & Broadcasting.
This time, however, best mate and PBL boss James Packer has promised that things will be different. In the interim, the company has sold 75% of its stake in PBL Media, owner of Nine, to a private equity firm.
Comments Gyngell: "I'm coming back to win. You can't be in this game if you aren't in it to win. It will take time, but my aim is to take Nine back to its former pre-eminence."
