Research group Jupiter Media Metrix is selling its online measurement unit Media Metrix to rival comScore Networks for $1.5 million (€1.6m; £2.3m).

The buyer will acquire the North American properties of Media Metrix and merge them with its own Media Solutions division, whose president Peter Daboll will take charge of the combined entity. The Media Metrix name will be retained.

New York-headquartered Jupiter, suffering from the same downturn as the dotcoms whose fortunes it tracks, has been offloading assets to raise cash. It recently sold its AdRelevance unit and Media Metrix contracts in Europe to NetRatings.

Now without the unit that supplies two-thirds of its moniker, Jupiter plans to rechristen itself in the near future.
