Yet more court action awaits embattled News Corporation unit NDS Group, with attempts by Malaysian billionaire Ananda Krishnan to join a suit against it.
NDS manufactures the smart cards that secure reception of pay-TV broadcasts by television set-top boxes. Earlier this year, rival firm Canal Plus Technologies (then part of Vivendi Universal, but sold last month to Thomson Multimedia) launched legal action against it, alleging UK-based NDS cracked its software code and handed it to internet pirates [WAMN: 12-Mar-02].
Krishnan, who controls Malaysian pay-TV service Measat Broadcast Network Systems, has applied to a US court to intervene in the case.
The involvement of Measat is likely to revive the suit, which Vivendi agreed to drop when forging an Italian pay-TV deal with NewsCorp [WAMN: 10-Jun-02].
