LONDON: Rupert Howell (pictured), 80s ad agency superstar and until April of this year regional director and president of McCann Erickson UK, is reportedly in line for a senior position at Britain's largest commercial broadcaster ITV.

According to The Guardian newspaper, Howell met on Thursday with top ITV honchos to finalize a key executive role at the struggling broadcaster, probably at main board level.

But even if a formal job offer has been tabled, say ITV insiders, there are several negotiating hurdles to be cleared before an official appointment is made.

The role of commercial director has been vacant at ITV since May, and it is speculated that the replacement's remit will be extended to include liaison with Wall Street and City of London.

Howell, for two decades the archetypal agency front man, would be well-suited (in both senses of the word) for such a role.
