LONDON: "Advertising is the most fun you can have with your clothes on", famously quipped Brooklyn-born adland legend Jerry Della Femina (pictured). He was wrong – as Britisher Stephen Carter can now attest.

The latter certainly had a whole lotta fun in his meteoric rise from graduate trainee on the Kellogg's account to managing director of JWT London, although it's unlikely the same can be said of his next slither up the greasy pole to become chief executive of communications regulator Ofcom.

That role was seen by some as Carter's grooming for political office, a prophesy duly fulfilled when in January he became prime minister Gordon Brown's chief of staff. During this test of stoicism it is thought the laffs evaporated entirely.

Happily, the boffos returned last weekend when Carter was handed a peerage, a prerequisite to his appointment as minister for communications, technology and broadcasting in the UK's upper (but mainly decorative) chamber, the House of Lords.

The earnest Carter will have a hilarious ball in this gothic Disneyland. Especially the occasional dressing-up in red robes with ermine trimmings.

Even more fun than advertising!
