WASHINGTON DC: The Federal Communications Commission has given a green light to a $12.3 billion (€9.2bn; £6.2bn) deal which will see a private equity consortium, led by billionaire investor Haim Saban, buy the nation's largest Spanish language broadcaster, Univision Communications.

However, to get the go-ahead, Univision has agreed to pay a $24 million fine and to improve the quality of its children's television programs.

Child advocacy groups had complained that the broadcaster flouted rules requiring it to air at least three hours a week of educational kids' shows, opting instead to fill the slots with soap operas.
