Rather surprisingly, September was the busiest month of the year so far for British travel websites, according to research from NetValue.

Some 4.8 million unique home internet users accessed UK travel and transport websites last month, despite fears that the fallout from September 11 would hurt the sector. Approximately one in five then made a secure connection.

The biggest winners in terms of monthly visitor numbers, says NetValue, were budget airlines such as EasyJet and Ryanair.

However, the UK appears to be in the minority in reporting a rise – figures from most other European countries showed a decline in visitors to travel websites, with 326,000 fewer users accessing such sites in France and 571,000 in Germany.
