SYDNEY: Even the surprise appearance of Pamela Anderson (pictured) in last week's Australian Big Brother show failed to save the sagging charade, prompting broadcaster Ten Network to axe the long-running amateur acting contest after eight series.
Although not in itself an issue of global significance, the show's demise Down Under in the wake of a ratings plunge could be the beginning of the end for production giant Endemol's fatigued franchise.
Ten Network chief programmer David Mott confirmed the current series would be the last, citing growing concern over falling ratings. "The audience know how it works, the housemates know how it works," he told the Sydney Morning Herald.
Seeming bemused by the show's lack of audience va-va-voom, Mott kvetched: "The production values are solid and the housemates are giving us content, but we're still seeing further [audience] erosion."
