One of the few Formula One motor racing teams to eschew sponsorship from tobacco companies is preparing to race in the forthcoming Belgian Grand Prix with the logo Tobacco Free emblazoned on its car.

BMW-Williams is instead sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline's stop-smoking brand NiQuitin CQ.

The logo may also serve as a gentle reminder that this year's Belgian event narrowly escaped cancellation, following the banning of tobacco advertising and F1 sponsorship by the nation's health ministry.

Although the Belgian government gave the green light for limited tobacco ads this time round, future F1 events could be a BMW-Williams one-car race when the Europe-wide ban on sponsorship of international motor sport by tobacco companies takes effect in 2005.
