RESTON, VA: Apple has been ranked as the top smartphone manufacturer in the US with 41.8% market share, although Google Android is the top smartphone platform, the latest industry data has revealed.

According to research firm comScore, nearly three-quarters (73.6%) of US mobile subscribers owned a smartphone at the end of November 2014 and this equated to 178m people.

Apple devices remained their favourite choice, capturing 41.8% of the market (down 0.2% since the end of August 2014) while its main rival, Samsung, secured second place with 29.7% market share (up 0.8% since August).

LG held on to its third-placed ranking with 7.6% market share (up 0.9%), followed by Motorola with 5.2% and HTC with 3.7%.

However, Google Android ranked as the top smartphone platform at the end of November with more than half the market (52.6%), followed by Apple (41.8%), Microsoft (3.4%), BlackBerry (2.0%) and Symbian (0.1%).

After launching the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in September last year, Apple will be hoping to increase the challenge its iOS system poses to Android.

The company would have been encouraged by a separate report from research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, which found the market share for iOS increased in the US, Germany, the UK, China, France, Australia, Italy and Spain in the three months ending in November 2014.

The iPhone 6 was the best-selling smartphone in the US during the period, gaining 19% of total smartphone sales, Kantar said.

Returning to the comScore findings, Facebook ranked as the top smartphone app, gaining 69% of audience reach, followed by Google Play (52.1%), Google Search (51.8%) and YouTube (50.8%).

While still dominant, Facebook's share represented a decline of seven points since November 2013, according to Marketing Land, which also noted that YouTube's share of smartphone apps grew by six points over the same period.

Meanwhile, Instagram grew from 26.2% in November 2013 to 30.7%, while Amazon Mobile secured audience reach of 20.2% – an impressive performance given it didn't even feature in the top 15 last year.

Facebook Messenger grew the fastest, however, rising from 22.1% in November 2013 to 43.1% in November 2014.
