MACLEAN, Virginia: America's largest newspaper publisher Gannett Company is to slash 1,000 jobs across its regional operations as advertising revenues and circulation figures continue to head south.

The publisher of the nation's largest-circulation title, USA Today – plus 84 dailies and around 900 weeklies in more than 30 states - said the cuts account for circa 3% of its local newspaper workforce.

Around 600 people will lose their jobs as the result of lay-offs. Others will go through natural wastage - retirements, resignations and leaving open vacant positions.

Spokeswoman Tara Connell said the company is also centralizing customer service, streamlining printing, financial and other functions and outsourcing some operations in an effort to trim costs.
