DULLES, Virginia: AOL has appointed John Burbank to the role of chief marketing officer as part of its transition from a subscriber-led web portal to an advertising-supported online competitor to Google and Yahoo.

Burbank had previously been vp marketing at US telco AT&T. It is unclear whether his arrival will result in changes to AOL's agency roster, which currently includes Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos.

His appointment is one of a number of senior arrivals at AOL during the last year, including that of ceo Randy Falco, who commented: "John will help consumers better understand the unique products and programs we offer, and he will help ensure that AOL addresses the needs of our consumers and our advertising partners."
