Tencent, owner of the QQ instant messenger and online portal, is one of China's leading internet companies. Its Virtual World Real Trust survey was set up to investigate online attitudes and behaviour in China's Tier 1 to Tier 4 cities. The study interviewed 3,133 people in nine cities.

Based on data and analysis on users' backgrounds, values, online usage behaviours and attitudes, the study distinguished five key online user profiles.
