The organizers of the first Digital Matters conference, held in Singapore in May, clearly had some doubt about the role of advertising in an increasingly digital media industry. In a two-day conference, there were two separate panels addressing the question of whether advertising will matter as media goes digital.

And little wonder. With the panel on Millenials arguing that the post-1990 generation has no tolerance for ads, and the publishing panel singing the praises of subscription...
