The UK faces a period of profound economic and social uncertainty.
Its coalition government, elected in May 2010, plans to reduce double-digit annual deficits in the public finances. And consumers are soon to feel the effects of this radical programme of tax increases and government spending cuts.
On the other hand, the programme is likely to begin at a time of improving economic conditions, with GDP having returned to growth in Q4 2009 following six consecutive quarters of decline.
