The terrorist attacks of 9/11 triggered a pervasive sense of anxiety that has shown up consistently in surveys—the “waiting for the other shoe to drop” syndrome. Now a shoe has dropped: not another terrorist attack but what appears to be the biggest financial meltdown since the Great Depression. With the stock market swinging wildly, consumers are ill at ease, unsure of what the future holds. Adding to the drama is an increasingly competitive race for the White House.
