'Alcohol harms and we want to see the glorification of it upon our television screens ended. Adverts don't say have a glass or two. They portray people getting off their faces on alcohol.' It was with these words that Leigh Bassett, a University of East Anglia medical student, proposed a resolution at the British Medical Association's Annual Conference in July 2003 calling for a ban on alcohol advertising.
