The purpose of this article is to examine media developments across the Asia region. We examine the historical origins of the communications media right back to their beginnings, which, like gunpowder, astronomy and even advertising (according to one source), also lie in China.

From this overview it is possible to draw comparisons between how the media have responded to technological and commercial challenges over the years. Equally, the way different regulatory structures have evolved across the region to cope with governments' fears about the media's power and influence can be traced....
