Introduction

For a long time in France audiometric measurement of TV audiences was only concerned with terrestrial channels. Cable and satellite TV audiences were measured by means of timely surveys carried out using individual diaries over some weeks.

There were near four million households with cable or satellite TV in 2000. However, according to Mediamat (the French TV audience daily audiometric measurement system), the thematic channels indicated an audience share of 8% (31% if referenced only to subscribing households) but penetration rates did not allow reliable results by channel.
