Time is finite. There are but 24 hours in a day and all of us need to devote at least a few hours to sleep. Media consumption must share the largely fixed amount of time that remains with other activities like work, travel and eating.

As wealth has increased, markets have liberalised and technology has forged ahead, and consumer choice in most goods and services has mushroomed.
