When I first began to prepare for this talk,* and seriously think about what marketplace information would look like 10 years from now, I recalled the 'first law of forecasting,' which I was taught 20 years ago when I entered the research field: 'Give them a number or give them a date, but never give them both.' It's a guideline that's served me well.

I also thought it would be amusing to look at what futurists of the past said about what the 1990s...
