Throughout the 1980's the Government challenged the glass industry to increase levels of glass recycling, resulting in an extensive network of bottle bank sites being established throughout the UK. There are now over 20,000 bottle bank sites across the country one for every 2,700 people and 480,000 tonnes of glass were recycled through them (22.0% of the total available) in 1998....
