In the 1980s 3i, Britain's largest specialist provider of investment capital for private businesses, built a very high profile image for itself. With distinctive, colourful advertising, and its memorable 'Phil Sutton' logo, in many ways 3i caught the mood of the times in a rather grey institutional market. 3i was a 'highly visible and reputable brand' with communications that 'are visually of high impact, creating a modern, dynamic, youthful, progressive and innovative image'. (The Research Business, 1991.)
