Resourcing the service

In the autumn of 1987, marketing director Ian Harkness asked Barkers to assess driver recruitment prospects for London Buses for the coming (financial) year, 1 April 1988–31 March 1989. At that time, London Buses operated 4,700 buses on 350 routes, each bus covering an average of 30,000 miles per year. With 800,000 people regularly commuting to work by bus, the company averaged some 3 million bus journeys every weekday. Of 19,000 people employed by London Buses, some 11,000 were drivers. Staff...
