Building societies have grown spectacularly since World War II, holding 75% of outstanding mortgage loans and accounting for over 50% of personal liquid financial assets. Behind this success has lain a history of direct and indirect governmental control over their competitors, notably the high-street banks. The 1980s have been a buoyant period for the building societies' traditional markets. Home ownership and mortgage demand has continued to grow, while increasing affluence has fuelled the savings market....
