BACKGROUND

General

Since the mid 1950s, effectively until the coming of the Thatcher Government in 1979, successive British Governments have actively encouraged the amalgamation of separate companies into larger units more able to withstand US and European competition.

In 1957 Duncan Sandys, then Minister of Defence, when talking about the aviation industry said that he could envisage a day when Britain had only four major aerospace companies: one airframe manufacturer, one for helicopters, one for aero-engines and one for airframe and engine system and equipment....
