Introduction

Television audiences have been monitored using electronic measurement devices for over 50 years. Originally the electronic measurement was only of the TV, involving detection of whether the TV set was on and which channel was tuned. This generation of meters was, rather obviously, known as set meters. Information about which people were viewing was typically collected by means of paper diaries, where the respondent indicated which periods they had viewed.
