In the past, electronic data processing (EDP) was organised around a single large mainframe computer. As a consequence, there was a central EDP department, a central processing unit, central data, central EDP management, and above all, central system development. The organisation of survey processing reflected this central approach: data-collection and entry, editing, imputation and tabulation were separate processes, often done in batches, with several batch cycles per process.
