But according to Rose Marcario, CEO of Patagonia – the high-end outdoor apparel group that has blazed a trail through emphasising eco-friendly business practices – the compass followed by these brands often points in exactly the wrong direction.

"I think there is 'good' growth and 'not-good' growth," she told delegates at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. "We manage our growth. We could be much, much bigger than we are financially, but we manage it.
